Worked example
Square pyramid example: base 4.5 cm, height 5 cm
A 4.5 cm square base and a 5 cm vertical height give triangular faces with slant height √(5² + 2.25²) ≈ 5.48 cm. The volume is 4.5² × 5 ÷ 3 = 33.75 cm³.
The net has one square and four matching triangles. It has five faces, unlike a tetrahedron with four triangles.
The height entered in the tool is the vertical height inside the solid, not the height drawn on a triangular face.
How to print and assemble
- Set base side and vertical height. Preview the fold before downloading.
- Print at 100%, check the calibration line and cut around the outside tabs.
- Score the four base edges, lift the triangular faces and glue neighboring edges one seam at a time.
The geometry
Square pyramid dimensions
Each triangular face has slant height √(h² + (s ÷ 2)²), where s is the base side and h is the vertical height. Volume = s²h ÷ 3.
Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
What kind of pyramid does this make?+
It makes a right square pyramid: a square base with the apex centered above it.
Is vertical height the same as slant height?+
No. Vertical height runs inside the pyramid to the base center. Slant height runs down a triangular face and is calculated automatically.
Is a square pyramid the same as a tetrahedron?+
No. A square pyramid has one square base and four triangles, five faces in total. A tetrahedron has four triangular faces and no square base.
